I heard that after this interview, you have other works to attend to.
That’s right. I have practice. We’re preparing for our comeback! (This interview was conducted in early October, prior to SEVENTEEN’s release of their 12th mini album.)

You’ve been at this photoshoot since morning, and now it’s already evening. Do you still have to go to practice tonight? Don’t tell me you’re heading to the gym to work out after that!

I already worked out this morning before coming to the shoot.

Wow, where do you get all your energy from? You don’t look tired at all.

Photoshoots are something I really enjoy, so maybe that’s why, today was especially fun because I got to see and try on new outfits from Dior.

So, you see photoshoots as something fun rather than stressful?  

There are things that can feel pressuring, though. Back in the day, when I’d work with photographers or crew members who looked serious or strict, I’d get irrationally nervous—even though they didn’t actually do anything to intimidate me. I’d think, “If I mess up, I’m doomed!” (laughs). But now, I’m more relaxed. I’ve even started to see interpreting their directions as a fun challenge.  

For example, if they ask me to stand upright, I imagine myself as a knight in armor. Or, if they tell me to sit and look relaxed on a chair, I picture myself in an old Parisian building with curtains billowing in the breeze. During a shoot, I let my imagination run wild and go wherever it takes me.

(หัวเราะ) ผมว่าคงเพราะผมอยากให้บรรยากาศมันเป็นแบบนั้น เหมือนเวลาไปทำงานต่างประเทศแล้วคนชอบถามคำถามพื้นๆ อย่าง “ไฮ! คุณมาจากไหน? คุณทำอะไร?” ต่อให้พวกเขาจะไม่รู้จักคุณจริงๆ ก็เหอะ แต่มันฟังดูไม่เป็นธรรมชาติ เพราะงั้นใครสักคนต้องเป็นคนเริ่ม ซึ่งผมไม่เกี่ยงที่จะเป็นคนๆ นั้นถ้านั่นจะช่วยให้บรรยากาศรอบข้างมันดีขึ้น

I really enjoyed watching you work today. The way you approached the crew, even those you weren’t familiar with, and joked, “I think my fingers look a bit stubby in the photos, don’t they?” had me thinking, “Wow, he’s so natural.”

Really? (laughs) I guess it’s because I want to create that kind of atmosphere. It’s like when you’re working abroad, and people start with basic questions like, “Hi! Where are you from? What do you do?” Even if they don’t actually know who you are, it feels a bit forced. So, someone has to take the lead and set the tone. I don’t mind being that person if it helps create a more comfortable and positive vibe.

I still remember when my colleague interviewed SEVENTEEN’s Hip-Hop Unit and came back raving about how fun, genuine, and amazing all of you were. And mind you, this colleague of mine isn’t someone who praises people easily.

I’m so happy to hear that! It’s really comforting to know.

ใช่ครับ ผ่านหูพวกเราเยอะมาก ผมมองว่าพวกเราโชคดีที่เป็นที่ยอมรับ แต่เรื่องที่เราอยู่ในวงการมานานนั่นก็ด้วย และยิ่งอยู่ สมาชิกแต่ละคนก็เริ่มมีประสบการณ์ ทักษะ และวิธีจัดการความเครียดของตัวเอง คุณเริ่มแยกแยะได้ว่าเรื่องไหนจำเป็นหรือไม่จำเป็นต้องทำ ซึ่งบางครั้งมันอาจจะไปกระทบความรู้สึกคนอื่นบ้าง แต่ยังนับว่าดีที่คนยังมองว่าพวกเราไนซ์แล้วก็น่ารัก

You must hear this kind of feedback a lot, though, right? Wherever you go, people always seem to mention SEVENTEEN’s sincerity and unity.

Yes, we do hear it a lot. I think we’re fortunate to have earned that recognition, and it probably has to do with how long we’ve been in the industry. Over time, each of us has gained more experience, developed our skills, and learned how to handle stress in our own ways. You start to figure out what’s truly necessary and what isn’t. Sometimes, that might unintentionally affect others, but we’re grateful that people still see us as nice and approachable.

SEVENTEEN’s sincerity and humility continue to be admired. In a career where you’re constantly in the public eye, under scrutiny from so many different people, it must be challenging to stay true to yourselves. Is that how you’ve managed to maintain your balance?

It’s not easy, to be honest. I don’t think it’s something you can fully control (laughs). But we’ve developed a sort of instinct over time. Even when we’re joking around or having fun, this instinct kicks in and warns us if we’re about to say something inappropriate. Being straightforward can be good, but if your words might hurt someone, it’s better to stay silent.

Everyone in the group has their own sense of what they need to be mindful of. At some point, it becomes more about respecting others for who they are.

ผมสงสัยมาตลอดว่าผู้ชาย 13 คนบุคลิกต่างกันมาสนิทสนมกลมเกลียวกันแบบนี้ได้ไง แต่พอมาคิดดู มันก็เหมือนครอบครัวใหญ่ที่มีพี่น้องหลายคน ธรรมชาติจะหลอมให้คุณรู้จักการอยู่รวมกันเป็นหมู่คณะของมันไปเอง ไม่นับการเรียนรู้ความคิดนิสัยใจคอของกันและกันด้วย

อันนี้จริงเลยครับ มันมีโมเมนต์แบบนั้นเยอะมาก  เอาจริงพวกเราทะเลาะกันบ่อยกว่าที่หลายคนคิดด้วย (หัวเราะ) แต่ก็เป็นเรื่องเลี่ยงไม่ได้เมื่อคุณมีความคิดเห็นที่ต่างกัน ที่เปลี่ยนไปคือตอนยังเด็กเราจะเถียงกันแล้วก็คิดว่า “ทำไมมันเป็นคนแบบนั้นนะ?” แต่ตอนนี้มันจะแบบ “ต่างคนก็ต่างที่มา” พวกเราจะพูดเสมอ “มันไม่ผิด มันแค่ไม่เหมือนกัน” มันกลายเป็นหลักสำคัญในวิธีคิดของพวกเราไปแล้ว

I’ve always wondered how 13 guys with such different personalities can be so close and united. But when I think about it, it’s kind of like a big family with many siblings. Naturally, you learn how to live and function as a group, not to mention understanding each other’s thoughts and personalities over time.  

That’s absolutely true. There are so many moments like that. Honestly, we argue a lot more than people might think (laughs). But that’s inevitable when you have differing opinions. What’s changed is that, when we were younger, we’d argue and think, *“Why is he like that?”* But now it’s more like, *“Everyone comes from a different background.”*  

We often say, *“It’s not wrong; it’s just different.”* That’s become a core principle in how we think and approach things.

Let’s talk about your new album. Your latest track, “LOVE, MONEY, FAME (feat. DJ Khaled),” has such a catchy title, I must say.  

One thing our team unanimously agreed on from the start when discussing this album was, “It has to be hip, it has to be cool.” But the message this song really wants to convey is that while people chase after fame, money, and all the things they desire, in the end, the most important thing will always be love.

That’s a reflection of true values.

Exactly. The title of our 12th mini-album, SPILL THE FEELS, is a message encouraging people to embrace and express their emotions freely. Being honest about your feelings doesn’t always have to be positive. You can express anger, disappointment, sadness, or happiness. And when you’re happy, you should know how to enjoy it fully. The lead single focuses on love, which is one of these emotions.

At first glance, seeing the album title might make you think, “Oh, another hip-hop track about success, huh?” But once you listen, you’ll realize it dives much deeper than that. Personally, I think SEVENTEEN’s ability to find balance is one of our greatest charms.

Interesting how the acronym of this track, “LMF,” aligns with the title of your 10th mini-album, “FML.”

Yes! It’s actually the reverse of FML.

อันนี้คือตั้งใจใช่มั้ย?

ทีแรกผมก็นึกว่าตั้งใจเหมือนกัน! แต่เอาจริงเรื่องบังเอิญล้วนๆ ตอนที่สังเกตผมยังคิดเล่นๆ กับตัวเองเลยว่า “ถ้าใครมาสัมภาษณ์จะบอกว่าจงใจ” (หัวเราะ) ย้อนไปตอนออก “FML (F*ck My Life)” เราตั้งใจพูดถึงโลกที่วุ่นวาย แต่เที่ยวนี้ กับ “LMF (Love, Money, Fame)” เรากะจะบอกว่าต่อให้เป็นโลกที่วุ่นวายแบบนี้ มันก็ยังมีความรัก เงินทอง และชื่อเสียง และในบรรดาทั้งหมด ความรักสำคัญสุด อันนี้ตีความแบบคร่าวๆ นะ

Was that intentional?

At first, I thought it was intentional, too! But honestly, it’s pure coincidence. When I noticed it, I even joked to myself, “If anyone asks in an interview, I’ll say it was deliberate.” (laughs)

When we released FML (Fck My Life),* it was meant to reflect the chaos of the world. But this time, with LMF (Love, Money, Fame), we wanted to convey that even in a chaotic world, there’s still love, money, and fame. And out of all those, love is the most important. That’s just a simplified way of interpreting it.

See? You just admitted you thought about twisting the interview, but then you chose to tell the truth instead.

Oh, come on… I only said I thought about it! Of course, I’d still answer truthfully in the interview. (laughs)

I’ve seen you on variety shows on YouTube—you’re pretty hilarious!

I’d like to think I’m funny, but saying “I’m a funny person” doesn’t entirely feel like me, to be honest.

หมายถึงพูดถึงผม? ก็แบบ “เขาเป็นคนใสๆ” เป็นคนน่ารักอารมณ์ดี รู้จักใช้คำพูดคำจา หัวไว แล้วก็มุกเยอะ เป็นคนเจียมเนื้อเจียมตัวไม่ขี้โอ่ (หัวเราะ)

What do the people around you say about you?

You mean what do they say about me? They say things like, “He’s pure-hearted,” “He’s sweet and cheerful,” “He knows how to choose his words,” “He’s quick-witted,” and “He’s got a lot of jokes.” They also say I’m humble and not boastful. (laughs)

So, is that what you’re like?

If you feel that way, I’d be really grateful if you could write that in the interview. But just to be clear, I didn’t say it myself!

(หัวเราะ) แต่ผมก็รู้สึกแบบนั้นจริงๆ คุณอาจจะไม่ใช่ประเภทยิงมุกทีคนฮาตรึม แต่เรื่องเซนส์การจับจังหวะกับทักษะในการยกระดับการสนทนาของคุณมันไม่ธรรมดา แต่ขนาดนั้น พอสมาชิกในวง SEVENTEEN มาอยู่กันครบ คุณกลับเงียบซะงั้น

เฮ้ย จริงดิ? (หยุดคิด) ไม่ได้ตั้งใจให้เป็นแบบนั้น แต่พอคุณพูดขึ้นมา ผมก็คงต้องว่าจริงแล้วล่ะ มันคงเป็นนิสัยที่ผมซึมซับมาน่ะ เอาจริงก็ไม่ใช่แค่ผมคนเดียวหรอก (ที่เป็น) ลองนึกภาพทุกคนที่เหลือต้องยั้งปากในสิ่งที่ตัวเองอยากพูดดูสิ หรือถ้าทั้ง 13 คนพร้อมใจกันพูดมันก็คงวุ่นไปอีกแบบ มันเหมือนกับ “ฉันอยากพูดอันนี้ รู้ด้วยว่าพูดไปแล้วคนต้องขำ แต่ไหนๆ คนอื่นก็แย่งพูดไปแล้ว ก็ลืมๆ มันไปละกัน” ผมว่าทุกคนในวงคงติดนิสัยแบบนั้นไปแล้วล่ะครับ

(laughs) But I do feel that way too. You might not be the type to throw jokes and get everyone laughing, but your sense of timing and ability to elevate a conversation is pretty impressive. But when all the SEVENTEEN members are together, you become quiet

Wait, really? (pauses to think) I didn’t intend for it to be like that, but now that you mention it, I guess it’s true. It’s probably just a habit I’ve picked up. Honestly, I’m not the only one (who’s like this). Just imagine if everyone had to hold back on what they wanted to say, or if all 13 of us started talking at once—it’d be a mess. It’s kind of like, “I want to say this, I know it’ll make people laugh, but since someone else already said it, I’ll just let it go.” I think everyone in the group has gotten used to that habit by now.

ครับ ปกติผมเป็นคนพูดเยอะนะ ถ้าจับผมไปอยู่ในวงสนทนาเล็กๆ อย่างรายการวาไรตี้โชว์ที่มีแค่สองหรือสามคน ผมจะพูดปร๋อ ขนาดที่สัมภาษณ์อยู่นี่ผมยังชอบเลย ถึงจะพูดอะไรได้ไม่ค่อยเต็มที่นักก็เหอะ (หัวเราะ)

So, does that mean you’re someone who enjoys making people laugh but doesn’t like to seek attention?

Yes, that’s right. I’m usually quite talkative. If you put me in a small conversation, like on a variety show with just two or three people, I’ll talk non-stop. Even during this interview, I’m enjoying myself, even if I can’t say everything I want to (laughs).

อย่างแรกครับ ผมมีความสุขกับการได้พูดได้สนุก แต่ก็ไม่อยากให้ถึงขนาดใครต่อใครพากันจับจ้อง อีกอย่างในสายงานที่ผมทำมันก็มีหลักเกณฑ์ที่ต้องยึดถือ มันดีที่ได้เปิดมุมอื่นของตัวเองบ้าง แต่ถึงขั้นเปลี่ยนตัวเองไปอยู่อีกเส้นทางเลยคงไม่ใช่

Being someone who enjoys talking and being on variety shows or hosting, they’re different, right? Which one do you think suits you more?  

The first one, for sure. I enjoy talking and having fun, but I don’t want it to the point where everyone is staring at me. Also, in the field I work in, there are guidelines I need to follow. It’s nice to show different sides of myself, but I wouldn’t go as far as completely changing to a different path.

ถูกเผงเลยครับ ขนาดสมาชิกวง Super Junior ยังคอยจับตาดูพวกเราตลอด ตั้งแต่ตอนเราเด็กๆ แล้ว บางทีด้วยการเป็นวงใหญ่แบบเราคงทำให้พวกพี่ๆ เขานึกถึงอดีตและรู้สึกผูกพันเป็นพิเศษ พวกพี่ๆ เขาจะพูดตลอดว่า “อย่าแยกกันนะ เกาะกลุ่มกันไว้ให้นานที่สุด แล้วพวกนายจะดีเอง แล้วมันก็เป็นสิ่งที่แฟนเพลงของพวกนายต้องการมากที่สุด” ฟังตอนนั้นก็เหมือนคำแนะนำทั่วไป แต่มาวันนี้ผมว่าผมเข้าใจมันมากขึ้นแล้วครับ SEVENTEEN จะดีที่สุดต่อเมื่ออยู่รวมกัน แล้วแฟนเพลงก็รักเรามากที่สุดตอนเราอยู่รวมกันนี่ล่ะ เราต้องเกาะกลุ่มรวมเป็นทีมเดียวกันไปให้นานเท่าที่จะนานได้

SEVENTEEN seems to be a group that values the unity of the group more than any individual. Is that to help manage your schedule more easily?  

Exactly! Even the members of Super Junior have been keeping an eye on us since we were young. Sometimes, being in a big group like ours probably reminds the older members of their past and creates a special bond. They always tell us, “Don’t split up, stay together as long as you can, and you’ll be fine. That’s what your fans want most.” Back then, it felt like general advice, but now I think I understand it much more. ผมมีเรื่องที่อยากทำเยอะเลยครับ ผมอยากลองทำรายการพาเที่ยว (travel vlog) อย่างพาไปดูทริปผมเที่ยวธรรมชาติ ไม่ต้องคุยกับผู้คนมาก

If there were no obstacles, what is something you’d like to try the most?

I have a lot of things I’d like to try. One of them is creating a travel vlog, like showing my trips to natural places. I wouldn’t need to talk to people much.

Really? Thank you! But a lot of people said it was boring.

But it was quite an adventurous trip, right? Like riding a bike with a helmet in Beverly Hills, stopping by a concept store to buy Nike shoes or Adidas shirts, and drinking beer while watching the sunset at Santa Monica Beach.

Yes, it was. The whole time I was there, LA gave me great experiences.

Even waiting to repair the bike at the shop after riding it until the tire went flat still looked good!

Right? I really liked that bike, but sadly, I couldn’t bring it back to Korea, so I gave it to a kid who was playing in the park nearby.

(หัวเราะ) ไม่รู้หรอกครับ ผมแค่ถาม “หนูอยากได้นี่มั้ย?” แค่นั้น บางคนอาจไม่เข้าใจ แต่สำหรับผม การทำสิ่งที่ไม่ค่อยจะมีเหตุผลหรือเข้าเรื่องให้เป็นความทรงจำดีๆ คือเป้าหมายอย่างหนึ่งถึงตอนนี้ทั้งเรื่องที่ผมขี่จักรยานแล้วยกจักรยานให้เด็กก็ยังเป็นความทรงจำดีๆ ในใจผม

You just gave it away like that? Did the kid know who you were?

(Laughs) No, not at all. I just asked, “Do you want this?” Some people might not understand, but for me, doing something that doesn’t really make sense or isn’t logical but turning it into a good memory is one of my goals. Even now, the memory of riding the bike and giving it to that kid is still a good memory in my heart.

ครับ! การเดินทางรอบโลกคือความฝันของผม ตอนเด็กๆ ผมเคยอยากมีใบขับขี่เรือยอชต์ แล่นไปยุโรปพอถึงแล้วก็บินกลับ ฝันนั้นยังอยู่นะ ไม่ใช่แค่คิดเพ้อไปเล่นๆ สักวันผมอยากทำให้มันกลายเป็นจริง

Are you someone who enjoys traveling?

Yes! Traveling around the world is my dream. When I was a kid, I used to want a yacht license, sail to Europe, and then fly back. That dream is still with me. It’s not just a passing thought—I really want to make it happen one day.

คล้ายภาพเลือนๆ ของตัวคุณเองในอนาคตที่แว่บเข้ามาในหัวเป็นครั้งคราว?

ประมาณนั้น ผมเป็นคนชอบคิดถึงอนาคตไกลๆ (หัวเราะ) เพราะงี้ไงถึงได้โดนแซวอยู่บ่อยๆ คนอื่นจะพูดถึงสิ่งที่พวกเขาอยากทำในปีหน้าหรือปีถัดไป แต่ผมนี่ล่อพูดไปอีกยี่สิบสามสิบปีโน่น

It sounds like a faint image of yourself in the future that occasionally flashes in your mind?

Kind of that. I’m the type who likes to think far into the future (laughs). That’s why I often get teased. Other people talk about things they want to do in the next year or the year after, but I’m over here talking about stuff 20 or 30 years from now.

ไม่นะ ตรงข้ามเลย ผมจินตนาการว่าตัวเองยังแข็งแรงอยู่ด้วยซ้ำตอนอายุ 50 ผมบอกทุกคนว่า “อีกสิบปีพวกเราก็จะยังเป็น SEVENTEEN แล้วกะอีแค่ปีสองปีข้างหน้าจะวอร์รีไปทำไม?” เล่นเอาพวกเขาถึงกับเถียงไม่ออกไปเลย

Well, if all I do is dream about getting old and cruising around the Caribbean, I totally deserve to get teased (laughs).

No, actually, it’s the opposite. I imagine myself still strong even at 50. I tell everyone, “In ten years, we’ll still be SEVENTEEN, so what’s the rush to worry about the next year or two?” That totally left them speechless.

เดี๋ยวนะ หมายถึงต่อให้เป็นอนาคตอีกไกล เมื่อถึงวันที่คุณออกเดินทางรอบโลก คุณก็ยังจะเป็นสมาชิกวง SEVENTEEN งั้นเหรอ?

ใช่แล้วครับ ระหว่างพักเบรก ผมอยากเดินทางท่องโลก ถ้าเราทัวร์อเมริกาผมอยากเช่ารถอาร์วีคันใหญ่ๆ ถ้าทัวร์รอบโลก บางที ผมอาจไปแล่นเรือยอชต์… ถึงจะฟังดูเพ้อเจ้อไปหน่อยก็เหอะ (หัวเราะ)

So, you’re saying you’ll still be a member of SEVENTEEN, huh?

Yes, that’s right. During breaks, I’d love to travel the world. If we tour the U.S., I’d want to rent a big RV. If we tour globally, maybe I’d sail a yacht… though it sounds a bit far-fetched (laughs).

ก็ความเป็น SEVENTEEN มันควรถูกเก็บรักษาไว้ไม่ใช่เหรอครับ? ผมพูดว่ามันคือความฝัน แต่มันก็เป็นเป้าหมายใหญ่ของผมจริงๆ คุณต้องมีเป้าหมายเพื่อให้ไปต่อ นั่นเลยเป็นอีกเหตุผลว่าทำไมผมถึงพยายามวาดอนาคตของตัวเองออกไปให้ไกลสุด

I’m surprised. I thought you were talking about life after retirement. Even with such big dreams, you still don’t want to let go of being part of SEVENTEEN.

Well, isn’t being SEVENTEEN something that should be preserved? I say it’s a dream, but it’s truly a big goal of mine. You need to have goals to keep moving forward, and that’s another reason why I try to imagine my future as far ahead as possible.
